AVENIDA RESTAURANT: 7402 Germantown Ave., Mount Airy

We are thrilled to announce that this week Avenida Restaurant was awarded the 2010 Best Kids Menu by Philadelphia Magazine.

At Philadelphia Magazine's "Best of Philly 2010" celebration last week, we rubbed elbows with Philadelphia dignitaries including Mayor Michael Nutter (pictured with us below) and the other Best of Philly winners. It was a blast!

In Philadelphia Magazine's Where We're Eating column, reviewers wrote:

"Husband-and-wife chefs Edgar and Kim Alvarez have turned the historic Cresheim Cottage into a modern, friendly Latin American eatery. It's the kind of place where a woman at the table next to you leans over and gushes, "Ohhh, is that the calamari? It looks delicious."

Avenida gets rave reviews from Philadelphia Inquirer Restaurant Critic Craig LaBan

IN THE NEWS: "Mount Airy's Avenida thrives despite Delaware Market House's departure."

Philadelphia Inquirer Restaurant Critic Craig LaBan rated Avenida "interesting, with above-average food" when he reviewed the Latin American restaurant in the Inquirer's FOOD section last Sunday, July 25.

"Based on two lovely recent meals in the vibrant new incarnation of the old Cresheim Cottage, during which the now colorful dining rooms and leafy back patio bustled with crowds sipping tropical cocktails and nibbling fragrant moles and pork pibil, I'd say Avenida is on the right track," he wrote.

"With entrées ranging reasonably from $15 to $20, this husband-and-wife chef team has clearly learned its recession lesson on affordability."

LaBan also talked about the voyage Chefs Kim and Edgar Alvarez have taken recently – from being owners of The Delaware Market House until 2008, to opening Avenida in December 2009. "This is the restaurant we have dreamed of owning," the chefs said.

LaBan explained: "When the economy came crashing down in 2009, it brought Kim and Edgar Alvarez's crab cakes with them – at least for a moment. Those cakes were among the signature items at the couple's former prepared foods store, the Delaware Market House in Gladwyne."

"That sorry moment for Gladwyne take-out addicts, perhaps, but has turned into a boon for Mount Airy, where the resilient Alvarezes have resurfaced with Avenida, a Latin-inspired neighborhood restaurant well-cast for a neighborhood that can use all the good flavors it can muster."
