Politicians, health insurance company executives, physicians, academics and hospital administrators come together to discuss the future of health care and importance of workplace wellness
Gaithersburg MD, September 15, 2008—On October 29, 2008 the health care benefits company Golden & Cohen is hosting the first annual DC Health Summit, a meeting of some of the top minds in the health care industry who will discuss and debate the future of health care in the United States.
“Research by the U.S. Department of Commerce shows that in 2006, more than $2.1 trillion was spent on health care in the United States,” says Stephanie Cohen, (pictured right) CEO of Golden & Cohen. “That represents 16% of the Gross Domestic Product. By 2017 the amount of money spent on health care is expected to increase to nearly $4.3 trillion, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) projects that by then health care will account for about 20 percent of GDP.”
These increasing costs mean policymakers, insurers, and the public are going to face some difficult decisions about the way health care is delivered and paid for, she adds.
“I have been in the trenches of the health care insurance industry for more than a decade, and what I see happening to my clients when they try to collect on their benefits not only disturbs me as a business owner — it infuriates me as a U.S. citizen and a mother,” Cohen explains. “That is why my partners and I at Golden & Cohen decided to host the DC Health Summit. Our goal is to bring the decision makers together—politicians, health insurance company executives, physicians, academics and hospital administrators—so we can start to come up with workable solutions.”
About the Summit
One of the key ways to shift the problem, Cohen believes, is to have all employers focus on worksite wellness.
To that end, Cohen invited Steven Aldana, PhD, of Wellsteps, to lead off the meeting with a keynote speech about workplace wellness and how employers can affordably and effectively integrate wellness programs into their corporate culture.
“Companies are always looking for ways to reduce employee-related expenses and many corporations and organizations are using health promotion programs as a reactionary effort to curtail ever-increasing, employee-related expenses of health care and lost productivity,” Aldana says. “During this in-depth session, we’ll talk about how it is possible to achieve and demonstrate a genuine return-on-investment (ROI) through worksite wellness programs.”
Following the keynote, a panel of leading-edge health care industry professionals will discuss the topic further — then open the discussion up to the audience for questions and debate.
Panelists include Virginia Senator George Barker, Kaiser Permanente’s Director of Population Care Dr. Amy Compton-Phillips, Neurosurgeon Dr. James Melisi, the National Rehabilitation Hospital’s VP Dr. Paul Rao, Maryland’s former Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, and UnitedHealthcare’s COO Dr. Sanford Cohen.
The event will be moderated by futurist Andy Hines of the global research and consulting firm Social Technologies, who will touch on some of the topics surrounding the future of health care.

About the Summit’s Moderator: Futurist Andy Hines
Andy Hines is a leading organizational, academic, and consulting futurist. In 2006 he joined Social Technologies to manage the firms consulting practice. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston MS Program in Futures Studies, a program from which he graduated in 1990.
Before joining Social Technologies, Andy established and ran the Global Trends Program for Kellogg Co., then served as futurist and senior ideation leader at Dow Chemical. Before that he was a partner with Coates & Jarratt, a futurist think tank and consulting firm in Washington, DC.
Hines has co-authored three books, including his most recent, Thinking about the Future: Guidelines for Strategic Foresight. Other titles include 2025: Science and Technology Reshapes US and Global Society, and Managing Your Future as an Association.
