Creative use of space is the goal for owner and art aficionado Judy Curry

Gaithersburg, MD, November 1, 2012 — “I love making something out of nothing, and I love art,” says Curry’s Auto Service co-founder and CMO Judy Curry. So when Curry’s Auto opens a new location, she is in her element when the site’s exterior walls are dull and drab.

“I view these walls as simply canvases on which to create beautiful murals,” Curry believes, which is exactly what the creative exec has done at the company’s Gaithersburg, MD, location.

This is the second mural project Curry’s Auto Service has finished in the last year after discovering that murals are a great opportunity to connect with neighbors through what is depicted in the mural.

“Everyone who drives by can appreciate the art,” she says. “There is no reason that art needs to live inside a museum or gallery.”

Making Murals Memorable

Curry’s Auto Service created its first mural in 2011 at its Arlington, Va., location, which is adjacent to Barcroft Park. And since Curry’s is a proud sponsor of Arlington Little League, it seemed only natural to feature images of kids at play in that mural project.

The local environment equally inspired the Gaithersburg, Md., mural. Designed by renowned DC mural artist Peter Krsko, this work of art features a large Ferris wheel (a nod to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds), as well as the city’s official flower: the peony.

The peony is especially notable in Gaithersburg, thanks to Edward P. Schwartz. In 1913, the successful realtor from DC bought what is now Gaithersburg City Hall, and planted the “World Famous Schwartz Peony Garden,” complete with 40,000 blooms from 410 varieties of peonies.

Curry knew that it would be a creative challenge to incorporate these two elements into one mural, but also knew that Krsko, a partner in the firm Albus Cavus, would find a way to do it beautifully.

The completion of the mural means discounts for customers.

“It just wouldn’t be appropriate to not celebrate the completion of the mural,” says Curry, who is offering a special throughout the month of November.
